Under the Provincial Police Service Agreement (PPSA), Alberta’s Public Safety Minister controls officer numbers and policing priorities—not Ottawa.
RCMP contracts come with 10–30% federal cost-sharing. That’s real savings for our communities, representing over $188 million every year.
Transitioning or creating a new police service would be expensive, the Government’s own report from 2021 estimated $372M in start-up costs and $164M more in annual costs for a provincial police service. With inflation, these numbers already rise from a combined $550M in 2021 to $650M in 2025.
The federal government is not ending contract policing. The RCMP remains a reliable, long-term solution for policing in Alberta.
The RCMP can scale up quickly in emergencies, such as wildfires, and bring the entire country’s resources to bear in any community, something a standalone provincial service simply can’t match.
Our Alberta RCMP Members live in our communities. They know our streets, schools, and our concerns. They’re your neighbours, mentors, coaches, and friends.
