Why the RCMP

The Alberta RCMP: Trusted, Proven, and Cost-Effective.

The RCMP has served Alberta communities since 1932. RCMP Members are deeply embedded in our communities and provide comprehensive policing services that combine deep local knowledge with the strength of a national force.

What Makes the RCMP the Right Choice for Alberta?

  • Federal Cost-Sharing: Municipalities with RCMP contracts receive 10–30% federal funding, significantly reducing local tax burdens.
  • Specialized Services: The Alberta RCMP delivers over 150 specialized services, including homicide investigations, forensics, major crimes, tactical response, cybercrime, and more.
  • Community Integration: RCMP officers live and work in the communities they serve, building trust and understanding local safety needs.
  • Scalable Support: Backed by a national network, the RCMP can rapidly scale resources in response to emergencies, natural disasters, or major events.
  • Programs Tailored to Local Needs: RCMP detachments engage in crime prevention programs, youth outreach, and Indigenous community engagement that reflect the diversity of the communities they serve.
  • Accountable to Albertans: The Provincial Police Service Agreement (PPSA) makes it clear that the provincial Minister has the authority to direct the number of police officers in the province and the priorities those officers respond to: not Ottawa.

The RCMP model provides an effective balance of local service delivery and national strength—something a standalone provincial agency simply cannot replicate without enormous cost and risk.

The Alberta RCMP is Positioned to Serve Albertans for Decades to Come.

The RCMP has the necessary infrastructure, experience, and local expertise to continue providing effective services to Alberta’s communities.

Last year, the RCMP received over 17,500 applications, marking the highest number in more than a decade. Among these, more than 3,000 applications came from Albertans in 2024, demonstrating the RCMP's continued strong recruitment.

In addition, the expansion of the Experienced Police Officer (EPO) program has been a tremendous success, with over 600 EPOs joining the RCMP last year, greatly benefiting Alberta.
